Product Care
Northern White Cedar grown in Northern Michigan and Canada is possibly the most decay and insect resistant wood available. It will stand up to Mother Nature's harsh outdoor challenges without breaking down or rotting like other types of wood. Since the wood contains natural preservative oils, it will last for many years. Staining, painting or sealing of the furniture is a choice, not a necessity. Once built, our Adirondak furniture is left unfinished in its beautiful light tan natural state so it can be finished and maintained to each customer's specific desires.
When left unfinished, your furniture will develop a silvery-gray color with age.
If you enjoy the color of the natural wood state, consider sealing your furniture with a good quality clear preservative. Follow application instructions provided by the manufacturer of your chosen product.
If you desire to finish your furniture to complement an already-existing décor, we recommend using a high-quality exterior stain. Staining your furniture will accent the natural grain of the wood and provide a sealer. Again, follow application instructions provided by the manufacturer.
Paint is our absolute last choice for a finish. This requires frequent refinishing as paint will chip and peel. If, however, you do choose to paint your furniture, check with your local paint specialist for recommendations of a high-quality, oil-based exterior paint. The oils in the wood tend to bleed through and discolor the finish if exterior latex paint is used. Prior to painting, we do recommend priming your furniture with a high-quality exterior primer.
Again, choosing to finish your Adirondak furniture is completely your choice. Of course, leaving it unfinished is the least difficult and labor-intensive. Our preference--Sealer. We love the look of the wood in its natural state. Whatever your choice, plan on applying additional coats approximately every couple of years. We know you'll enjoy your furniture for many years to come!!
